A committee tasked with preparing Ghana’s bid for the 2027 African Union chairmanship has completed its work, submitting five reports to President John Mahama, according to Graphic Online.

The reports were handed over on Sunday, 23 August 2026, marking the end of the preparatory phase for Mahama’s expected tenure as AU chair, the outlet reported. The submission was also covered by Modern Ghana and CitiNewsroom, which confirmed the president received the five documents ahead of the 2027 term.

The committee was established earlier this year by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who named members to shape the agenda for Mahama’s AU chairmanship, according to Adomonline.com. Ablakwa has said the president’s tenure is expected to be “transformative and impactful,” as reported by 3News.

Graphic Online’s report did not disclose the contents of the five reports, nor did it specify which areas of the AU agenda they address. The committee’s completion of its work, however, signals that Ghana is moving forward with its plans to lead the continental body in 2027.

The AU chairmanship rotates among the five African regions, and Ghana’s bid comes as the West African bloc seeks to play a more prominent role in continental affairs. Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, is expected to assume the AU role in January 2027.

What to watch next: whether the government releases the reports’ recommendations and how they shape Mahama’s priorities once he assumes the chairmanship.
