Gardaí have detected more than 2,540 speeding offences so far over the August Bank Holiday weekend, according to the Irish Independent. One driver was recorded travelling at 182 km/h during the enforcement operation.

The figure covers the first three days of the policing operation, as reported by The Journal. In a separate incident, a motorist was clocked at 179 km/h on the Carlow-Kilkenny border, according to KCLR 96FM.

The August Bank Holiday weekend is traditionally a high-risk period on Irish roads, with increased traffic volumes and a higher incidence of serious collisions. Gardaí have been running targeted speed checks nationwide as part of a broader road safety push.

In Galway, one motorist was caught driving at double the speed limit, Galway Bay FM reports. Meanwhile, Gardaí in Tipperary have issued a road safety message focusing on the risk of serious injuries, according to Tipp FM.

The enforcement data reflects a continued focus on speeding as a leading factor in fatal and serious injury crashes. Gardaí have not yet released a full breakdown of the weekend's figures, including the number of checkpoints operated or the total number of vehicles stopped.

The operation is expected to remain in place until the bank holiday period ends. Further updates on the final tally of offences are likely to be published by Gardaí in the coming days.
