French firefighter unions are accusing authorities of prioritising volunteer reinforcements over professional crews, a move they say weakens the country's civil security system. The claims were reported by 20 Minutes on Wednesday, 5 August 2026.

According to 20 Minutes, the unions argue that the growing reliance on volunteers is a deliberate choice that leaves professional firefighters sidelined during major operations. They say this approach masks deeper problems in the fire service, including chronic underfunding and a lack of state investment.

The complaints come as separate reports highlight mounting pressure on the volunteer system itself. France 3 Régions covered a petition, signed by more than 45,000 people, from the wife of a volunteer firefighter who said volunteers risk their lives for roughly 8.5 euros an hour. Marianne reported that despite a recent surge in applications, the shortage of volunteers is likely to persist due to a lack of recognition and a loss of purpose among existing staff.

Le Figaro quoted union representatives saying the label of "hero" is used to hide the deterioration of civil security, and called for a massive state investment in the service. In parallel, Le Monde reported that lawmaker Eric Coquerel, from the left-wing La France Insoumise party, has requested an amended budget to fund the fight against massive wildfires, or mégafeux.

The reports paint a picture of a fire service under strain, with professional and volunteer corps both facing distinct but connected challenges. Unions are pushing for more state funding, while politicians are beginning to call for emergency financial measures.

What to watch next is whether the government responds to the budget request and whether any new funding will address the concerns raised by both professional and volunteer firefighters.
