The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has withdrawn fraud charges against Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo, his colleague Mokwele, and several co-accused, according to multiple South African news outlets including EWN, eNCA, Daily Maverick, and News24. The withdrawal follows an order from the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) to halt the case pending further investigation.

The charges, which EWN reports were related to an alleged irregular appointment process, were dropped on Monday, 27 July 2026. Daily Maverick described the move as a capitulation by acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Andrea Johnson, while News24 confirmed the NPA had withdrawn the fraud case against the officials. eNCA also reported that the NDPP had ordered the charges against Khumalo to be dropped.

The accused had faced allegations of misconduct in how certain appointments were handled within the Crime Intelligence division. The NDPP’s decision to order further investigation suggests the case may be revisited if new evidence emerges. The withdrawal does not amount to an acquittal, and the matter remains open for review.

Observers will watch whether the NPA resumes the case after completing its additional probe, as the allegations have drawn significant public attention to the integrity of Crime Intelligence leadership.
