The French government presented its 2027 budget proposal on Thursday, according to BFM. Maud Bregeon said that "no one will be spared a compromise," BFM reported, signaling that negotiations over the plan are expected to be difficult.

The proposal includes changes to taxes, an "effort" on spending, and measures affecting pensions, according to Le Figaro. 20 Minutes reported that the plan touches civil servants and includes a freeze on family allowances. David Amiel, the minister for public accounts, told Le Parisien that the effort asked of retirees is "fair and proportionate."

The Haut Conseil des finances publiques, France's public finance watchdog, warned that the recovery plan faces major uncertainties, according to Les Echos. That assessment suggests the government's projections for closing the deficit may not hold.

The budget's contents, from tax measures to pension adjustments, indicate the government is trying to reduce spending across several areas at once. The reaction from the watchdog adds a note of caution about whether the plan's targets are realistic.

The next step will be parliamentary debate, where the compromise Bregeon described will have to be negotiated among lawmakers whose support the government needs to pass the budget.
