PSV Eindhoven lost 2-1 at home to Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, with former Ajax winger Carlos Forbs scoring the deciding goal in Eindhoven. According to Goal.com, Peter Bosz's team were beaten by opponents who made the most of the room PSV left open, and the result leaves the Dutch club facing a difficult path to the playoff stage.

Goal.com described the defeat as especially frustrating for PSV, who had spells of control in the match but were undone by their own willingness to push numbers forward.

Why it matters

The loss costs PSV points at a stage of the competition where room for error is thin. Goal.com reports that qualifying for the Champions League play-offs is now a considerable challenge for Bosz's side.

For Club Brugge, the win was built on a clear plan: sit deeper, absorb pressure and attack the gaps PSV created. Goal.com notes that the Belgians repeatedly found space behind PSV's advanced players, and the pattern decided the match.

The game also carried a personal edge. Forbs, who previously played for Ajax, was the player who punished PSV, first by wasting chances and then by taking the one that mattered.

An open first half that PSV let slip

Goal.com reports that an open contest had been expected in Eindhoven, and the opening 45 minutes produced chances at both ends. The clearest fell to Sergiño Dest, who ran onto a fine pass from Ivan Perisic but hit his effort too softly, allowing Yann Sommer to make the save.

PSV held a slight edge in the half, yet it was Club Brugge who went ahead after 25 minutes. Nicolò Tresoldi, described by Goal.com as the man in form, met a cross from Joaquin Seys with a clean header.

Bosz's side could have fallen further behind. Forbs broke through one-on-one against Kovár twice and failed to convert either chance, first sending his shot well over and then striking the Czech goalkeeper with his second attempt.

At the other end, PSV's threat was intermittent. Ruben van Bommel's speed gave them an outlet, though Goal.com reports that the Eindhoven side did not use it often enough. Dest came closest to an equaliser after a well-worked move, but Sommer stopped him again.

The equaliser, then the sucker punch

PSV needed a different approach after the interval, and Goal.com reports that they instead left even more room on the pitch. Club Brugge created major chances to add to their lead on the counter but were unusually wasteful in the final third, and the Belgians were soon made to regret it.

After 54 minutes, Kodai Sano brought PSV level with a shot that took a deflection, making it 1-1. Goal.com reports that the goal was a fair reward for PSV's efforts, and the home side still had time to turn the game around.

They pushed forward in search of a winner, but in doing so exposed themselves at the back. After Mijnans gave the ball away in a costly moment, a single through ball split PSV open, and the rapid Forbs capitalised to make it 1-2.

PSV kept throwing players forward in the closing stages but could not find another equaliser. Sommer saved a free-kick from Esmir Bajraktarevic, which Goal.com identifies as the last notable action of the match.

Club Brugge took the victory, and PSV were left to reckon with a result that Goal.com frames as a painful one on a night when the margins were there to be taken.

What to watch next is whether PSV can recover quickly enough to keep their playoff hopes alive, while Club Brugge will look to build on a win earned by patience and the speed of Forbs.
