Fleetwood Town knocked Premier League champions Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, winning a penalty shootout 5-3 after the sides finished 1-1 at Highbury, according to Sky Sports. The League Two club, currently sitting two points above the division's relegation places, advanced to the quarter-finals at the expense of the top-flight leaders.

Bruno Guimaraes saw his spot kick kept out by Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch, leaving Conor Haughey to convert the winning penalty past Illan Meslier. Sky Sports reports that Meslier was handed his Arsenal debut ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was not selected for the shootout.

Why it matters

The result ranks among the competition's biggest upsets. Fleetwood were playing non-league football as recently as 2012 and now have eliminated the reigning English champions, a feat Sky Sports described as one of the most significant shocks in the League Cup's history.

For Arsenal, the exit ends their involvement in a trophy they would have viewed as a realistic target. Manager Mikel Arteta selected a strong lineup, with Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz leading the attack and Martin Odegaard introduced in the second half, but the visitors could not turn possession and chances into a decisive scoreline.

A chaotic night at Highbury

The match was disrupted almost immediately. According to Sky Sports, an unidentified drone hovering above the ground caused a seven-minute stoppage after roughly 90 seconds of play, with referee Michael Salisbury prepared to take both teams off before the device moved away and play resumed.

Fleetwood took the lead in the 21st minute when Aaron Loupalo-Bi held off 17-year-old defender Marli Salmon and beat Meslier. Arsenal levelled five minutes after half-time, Gyokeres turning in from close range at the back post following good work from Cedach O'Neill, the Northern Ireland teenager making his first start for the club.

Arsenal's finishing let them down thereafter. Havertz missed two clear chances in quick succession around the hour mark, first sending an effort over and then finding the side netting, and Lewis-Skelly also failed to convert from close range. Sky Sports reports that Lynch then produced outstanding saves to deny Ben White and Odegaard in stoppage time, keeping Fleetwood level and forcing the shootout.

The match also turned on a disciplinary decision. Max Dowman, the 16-year-old Arsenal midfielder, was sent off for appearing to kick out at Harrison Neal. Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe described the call as "really harsh." Arteta later addressed his reaction to the dismissal of the teenager, per Sky Sports.

Fleetwood's composure from the spot

Fleetwood converted all five of their penalties, a sequence Arteta called "off the charts" and said would not be bettered. Their manager admitted the squad had not rehearsed a shootout.

"I'm going to be honest, we haven't practised once," he said. "I'm not going to blag that we had some meticulous penalties, we haven't. The lads took care of themselves. We have a 19-year-old centre-back that took the last one. I was a little bit worried when he was walking up, but Conor backs himself."

He added that the result had not yet fully registered and that attention would quickly shift to a league fixture on Saturday. "I couldn't believe it," he said. "The biggest night in the club's history in terms of opposition coming to town and we've managed to beat the champions somehow."

Arteta, speaking after the defeat, praised the opposition while criticising his side's failure to make their dominance count. "First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood for going through to the next round in the manner they've done it," he said. "A really sad day for us. I cannot fault at all the attitude of the players... but we had so much of the ball, had so many chances, so many shots and if you want the margins to be bigger than going to penalties, you have to capitalise on that. We didn't and football is about that."

He rejected the suggestion that effort was the problem. "It wasn't to do with attitude otherwise I would be here fuming. I'm sad, we're all sad," he said, adding that his team lacked the qualities needed to create a wider margin. He also singled out Odegaard for praise, saying the midfielder was the only Arsenal player to leave the pitch having impressed the Fleetwood squad.

Fleetwood's approach, their manager said, was built on limiting space rather than attempting to outplay their opponents. "We're not egotistical enough to think we're going to play the best team in the country and outplay them, so we had to ride our luck, deny space, deny options for them and we did that really well for the majority of the game."

What to watch next

Fleetwood now enter the quarter-final draw, while Arsenal must regroup for their league campaign. The result also raises questions about Arteta's team selection and his handling of Dowman, whose red card shaped the closing stages. Fleetwood return to League Two action on Saturday.
