The Department of State Services has arraigned five individuals in connection with the abduction of students from a school in Oyo State, according to Punch Newspapers. The suspects appeared before a federal high court on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, facing charges related to the kidnapping.
Punch Newspapers reports that the five accused are alleged members of Ansaru, a militant group designated as a terrorist organization by Nigerian authorities. The arraignment follows an earlier incident in which schoolchildren were taken from their institution in the Oriire area of Oyo State, an event that sparked widespread concern over security in educational facilities.
The case has drawn attention to the broader pattern of terrorism-related prosecutions in Nigeria. Premium Times Nigeria noted that the State Security Service has re-arraigned two jailed Ansaru leaders and three other convicts serving life sentences for terrorism, linking them to the same Oyo school abduction. Vanguard News also reported that the federal government filed fresh terrorism charges against two Ansaru commanders and three others in connection with the Oriire incident.

TheCable, in a separate commentary, criticized the judiciary’s handling of terrorism cases, suggesting that current legal processes may inadvertently embolden militants. The arraignment of the five suspects marks the latest step in the government’s efforts to hold those allegedly responsible for the school abduction accountable under the law.
The court has yet to set a date for the next hearing in the case.
