Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has asked political leaders in northern Adamawa to support capable candidates in the run-up to the 2027 elections, according to The Guardian Nigeria News.
Speaking during a meeting with leaders from the region, Fintiri stressed the need for unity and careful candidate selection, the outlet reported. He urged the leaders to prioritize competence over other considerations when backing aspirants for upcoming contests.
The meeting, which was also covered by the Adamawa State Government and LEADERSHIP Newspapers, comes amid growing attention on Adamawa North as a key battleground for the next governorship race. Business News Nigeria has described the zone as a focal point for political competition ahead of 2027.
Fintiri, whose tenure as governor is set to end before the next election cycle, has signaled readiness for a Senate run, according to the Adamawa State Government. In separate remarks, he pledged to provide effective representation for Adamawa North, the state government reported.
The governor’s appeal to northern Adamawa leaders is part of broader efforts to consolidate support in the region, which is expected to play a decisive role in determining the next occupant of the Government House in Yola. Political observers note that the zone’s voting strength makes it a priority for aspirants from various parties.
Fintiri’s call for competent candidates suggests he is positioning himself and his allies for the electoral contests ahead. The governor has not publicly endorsed any specific aspirant for the governorship, the reports indicate.
As the 2027 election cycle approaches, attention will remain on how northern Adamawa leaders respond to Fintiri’s appeal and whether they can reach consensus on a unified candidate. The coming months are likely to bring more clarity on the political alignments shaping the race.
