FIFA has formally opened an investigation into the Argentine Football Association (AFA) following incidents during the 2022 World Cup final, according to Chinese media outlet 中华网. Three Argentine players are at risk of receiving long-term suspensions as a result of the probe.
The investigation stems from a post-match altercation that occurred after Argentina's victory over France in December 2022. 中华网 reports that two of the players involved have been accused of committing violent acts during the confrontation. A Spanish player, aged 21, has also been cited in the disciplinary proceedings.
The outlet, citing multiple Chinese state media sources including 央视网 and 中国日报网, states that FIFA has already announced sanctions against three Argentine players. The governing body's action follows a review of the events that took place on the pitch after the final whistle.

This development marks a significant escalation in FIFA's handling of the incident, which had previously been subject to informal discussions. The investigation could result in substantial bans that would affect the players' participation in future international competitions, including the upcoming World Cup cycle.
The case now moves to FIFA's disciplinary committee, which will determine the final outcome of the investigation and any penalties to be imposed.
