A former gang leader is set to stand trial for the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, according to Punch Newspapers. The trial follows decades of investigation into the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur in Las Vegas.

Duane Davis, the accused, previously wrote a memoir in which he described his role in the killing, Punch Newspapers reports. However, The New York Times notes that Davis now claims the memoir was fiction, a reversal that is likely to be a central issue during the proceedings.

The case has drawn renewed attention three decades after the crime. According to the BBC, the trial represents a long-delayed pursuit of justice in one of hip-hop’s most infamous unsolved murders. ABC News adds that Marion "Suge" Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records who was in the car with Shakur during the shooting, has said he does not want to testify, asking to be "left out of it."

Davis was arrested and charged in 2023, marking the first arrest in the case. The trial is expected to examine evidence from the original investigation alongside Davis’s own public statements over the years, including his memoir and subsequent retraction.

Legal analysts cited by coastalabc.com have pointed to the unusual nature of the case, given the passage of time and the credibility questions surrounding key witnesses. The outcome will hinge on whether prosecutors can corroborate Davis’s earlier admissions despite his claim that they were invented.

The trial is scheduled to proceed as the court weighs the admissibility of Davis’s memoir and other statements. Observers will be watching to see if the prosecution can overcome the defense’s argument that the confession was never real.
