Former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi has said the impeachment move against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has no basis, NDTV reported on Friday. Rohatgi made the remark in an interview with the outlet, according to its report.
The comment comes amid mounting pressure on the Election Commission. The Indian Express reported that two Election Commissioners recorded objections to poll panel steps on 14 occasions over 10 months. NDTV also reported that Jagan Reddy, who once backed the law governing the selection of the poll body's chief, has now called for it to be revisited.
The Times of India reported that three BJP allies said the Election Commission must clear the air and cannot afford to lose public trust. Separately, Rediff reported that a Congress MP said "Kala Pani" would be an appropriate punishment for Kumar.
