A humanitarian worker infected with the Ebola virus has been transferred to the Netherlands for medical care, De Telegraaf reports. The patient is being received at a hospital in Leiden, according to Dutch outlets NU and NOS.

NOS reports that the aid worker contracted the infection in Congo. NU identifies the patient as a staff member of Médecins Sans Frontières, the medical charity known in English as Doctors Without Borders.

The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) said it had prepared to take in a patient carrying the Ebola virus, according to a statement from the hospital. The AD reported earlier that the infected patient was on the way to the Netherlands and would be admitted to the Leiden hospital that day.

The reports were published on Thursday, 1 October 2026. De Telegraaf's headline described the patient as a "hulpverlener," or aid worker, being moved to the Netherlands for treatment.

Ebola is a severe viral illness, and cases among health and aid workers are typically handled under strict infection-control measures. The Dutch reports did not provide further details on the patient's condition or the circumstances of the infection.

The LUMC's stated preparation indicates the hospital had activated procedures for receiving an Ebola patient before the transfer. Details beyond that were not included in the material available.

What to watch next: whether Dutch health authorities or the LUMC release further information on the patient's condition and the treatment being provided.
