The Allard Pierson museum in Amsterdam has returned an ancient vase to a small village in Sicily, roughly 29 years after it was stolen, De Telegraaf reports. The breakthrough came from an old wedding photograph, according to the newspaper, which helped uncover how the object had been taken.

Dutch outlets, including NOS, Het Parool, AD.nl and NRC, reported that the museum handed the vase back on its own initiative, an unusual step for an institution holding such a piece. AD.nl said the theft was exposed through old photographs of the antique vase, and that the item is going home after nearly three decades.

The village's role in the return was tied to the wedding photo, which De Telegraaf identified as the key to recovering the piece. Het Parool described the museum's decision to voluntarily give up the centuries-old vase as something that rarely happens.

NOS reported that the return involved a painful farewell for the museum, but one that served a higher purpose. NRC noted that the vase had to pass through numerous bureaucratic stages before it could travel from Amsterdam back to Sicily.

The reports did not specify the vase's exact age, its value, or the precise date of the theft. They also did not name the village or the people involved.

What remains to be seen is how the vase will be displayed or cared for once it is back in Sicilian hands, and whether the return sets a precedent for other disputed objects in Dutch collections.
