The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has received more than 16,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine, according to a report from EWN. The shipment arrived on Saturday, 22 August 2026, as part of the country's ongoing response to an active Ebola outbreak.

The delivery is an initial tranche of a larger allocation. EWN reports that the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the DRC is set to receive a total of 70,000 Ervebo doses to help contain the spread of the virus. The vaccine, developed by Merck, is the primary tool being used to protect frontline workers and high-risk contacts in affected communities.

The arrival comes as health authorities warn about the speed of infections. According to a BBC report, a vaccine trial is set to begin in the country, with WHO officials expressing concern over how quickly the virus is transmitting. The WHO and Africa CDC have both welcomed the vaccine allocation, stating that the doses are critical for curbing the outbreak.

The DRC has faced multiple Ebola outbreaks in recent years, and this latest response relies heavily on ring vaccination—a strategy where contacts of confirmed cases are immunized to break chains of transmission. The 16,000 doses now on the ground will allow health teams to begin vaccinating immediately in the hardest-hit areas.

Authorities are expected to prioritize healthcare workers and those who have been in close contact with confirmed patients. The remaining doses are scheduled to arrive in the coming days.

What to watch next: Whether the vaccination campaign can outpace the virus's spread in the DRC's affected regions.
