Manchester United twice recovered from two goals down to draw 4-4 with Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Patrick Dorgu heading in during the sixth minute of stoppage time, according to Sky Sports. Joshua Zirkzee had pulled one back in the 92nd minute before Dorgu met a final corner that Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki failed to deal with. The point leaves United in the relegation zone after ten Premier League games, Sky Sports reports.
Why it matters
United have not won a league match since August, and the result keeps Michael Carrick's side in the bottom three despite the drama of the finish. For Villa, the draw lifts them into the top half of the table, though Sky Sports describes the outcome as feeling like two points dropped. The match also underlined a defensive problem that has followed United all season: Sky Sports reports they have now conceded more goals than any other club in Europe's major leagues across all competitions.
A disastrous start, then a fightback
Villa were dominant from the opening whistle. Alysson beat Senne Lammens from a tight angle inside the first minute, and three minutes later the same player forced a save the goalkeeper could not hold, leaving Nicolas Jackson to score the second. According to Sky Sports, it was the earliest United have ever fallen two goals behind in a Premier League fixture.
United responded. Matheus Cunha won a penalty when Boubacar Kamara committed a lunging challenge, and Bruno Fernandes converted it. United pressed for an equaliser and got one before the break when Youri Tielemans scored against his former club, and Sky Sports reports they looked the likelier side at half-time.
That impression did not last. Diogo Dalot brought down Alysson early in the second half and John McGinn scored from the spot. Shortly afterwards Leny Yoro headed towards his own goal, Lammens pushed the ball against a post, and after Jackson miskicked, Leon Goretzka forced it in to restore Villa's two-goal cushion.
Substitutes change the ending
With many supporters already gone, Zirkzee, who had come off the bench, swept in a goal in the 92nd minute that appeared to be no more than a consolation. Then Suzuki misjudged one last corner and Dorgu headed home to level the score. Sky Sports reports that Dorgu was later named Player of the Match.
Carrick said afterwards that his team had hurt themselves with the goals they conceded in quick succession. He argued United were the better side for much of the game and that, setting aside the avoidable errors, he was disappointed not to have won. Asked whether the squad has enough to turn the season around, he said it does, while acknowledging that the habit of making games difficult for themselves must improve sharply. He added that he is clear about the direction the club needs to take and that it has to start winning matches.
Unai Emery was visibly frustrated. He said he was angry about the situation rather than at his players, and that Villa had lost the chance to gain two extra points. He noted that United had produced a similar late surge with home support behind them against Roma during the week, and that his side failed to defend Dorgu in the closing moments. Asked whether United are better than their league position suggests, Emery said they are, pointing to their individual quality and to the example of other big clubs who have spent time near the bottom in recent seasons.
Sky Sports' post-match analysis was less forgiving of the overall performance, describing the display as a mix of very poor defending at the start of both halves and a fightback that rescued a point when the game looked lost. The pundits noted that United's goalkeeper is not making the saves he was during last season's stronger run, and that Fernandes is short of his best form, while concluding that a bottom-three position is not acceptable for the club.
What to watch
United's next fixtures will show whether the late fightback against Villa signals anything more than a one-off, with Carrick still searching for a first league win since August.
