Argentina’s government has officially formalized a measure that loosens restrictions on dollar-denominated credit for businesses, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from economists and analysts over the risk of currency mismatches, according to La Nación.

The decision, reported by La Nación and confirmed by Clarin, was published in the official gazette on Saturday, August 15, 2026. Under the new scheme, companies will be able to access loans in US dollars more easily, a shift from previous tighter controls. However, the policy has sparked immediate concern among those who warn that borrowing in dollars while generating revenue in pesos could expose firms to serious financial strain if the exchange rate moves sharply.

The core of the criticism centers on the "descalce" — the mismatch between a company’s assets and liabilities in different currencies. According to Ambito, this is a known threat in Argentina’s economic history, where firms that took on dollar debt without matching dollar income were hit hard during devaluations. Economist Roberto Cachanosky, quoted by Perfil, drew a direct parallel to the 2001 crisis, saying the current push "reminds me of 2001," a period when widespread dollar borrowing ended in defaults and a massive currency collapse.

Página|12 also covered the new framework, noting that it is designed specifically for companies, not individuals, and appears aimed at stimulating investment amid tight capital controls. The government, led by President Javier Milei, has framed the easing as a way to boost corporate access to credit and encourage growth.

What to watch next is whether the central bank will add safeguards to prevent a repeat of past crises, and how quickly firms actually take up the new dollar loans.
