Democrats have regained control of the US House of Representatives in the midterm elections, according to Channels Television. The result, reported on Wednesday, is being described by the outlet as a significant setback for President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
Control of the House gives the Democrats a powerful platform in Washington, shifting the balance of power in Congress away from the Republicans. Channels Television frames the outcome as a major blow against Trump's party, though the report does not include seat counts, vote tallies or details of results in individual races.
The midterms are widely seen as a verdict on the sitting president's party, and this result places a check on Republican control in at least one chamber. The report does not specify the status of the Senate or other contests.
With the Democrats set to hold the House, attention turns to how the new majority will use its legislative and oversight powers, and how Trump and Republican leaders respond. Further details on the final seat totals and the Senate outcome are expected as results are confirmed.
