An interim examiner has been appointed to Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) as part of a bid to rescue the governing body from financial collapse, The Journal reports.

The appointment, confirmed on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, comes after the organisation became insolvent. The interim examiner will now assess HSI’s financial position and explore options to keep the body operational, according to The Journal.

The move follows weeks of mounting pressure on the equestrian governing body. The Currency, in a separate report, described HSI as “unseated and insolvent,” detailing the depth of the financial crisis. The Irish Times added that staff at HSI have already been briefed on the possibility of job cuts as part of the restructuring effort.

The interim examiner’s role is to determine whether a survival plan can be put in place, typically by seeking investment, negotiating with creditors, or restructuring operations. The Irish Independent also covered the appointment, noting it was made in a direct effort to rescue HSI from liquidation.

HSI is the national governing body for equestrian sport in Ireland, overseeing disciplines including show jumping, dressage, and eventing. Its financial troubles have raised concerns among riders, owners, and affiliated clubs, who depend on the organisation for funding, competition licences, and international representation.

The appointment of an interim examiner does not guarantee survival. The examiner will need to present a rescue plan to the court within a set period, and that plan must be accepted by creditors to take effect.

What to watch next is whether the examiner can secure a viable path forward for HSI, and how potential job cuts will affect the organisation’s day-to-day operations in the coming weeks.
