The dispute over the education qualifications of vice-presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming Raka has advanced to the evidence-gathering stage at Indonesia's Constitutional Court, Kompas.com reported on Tuesday.

According to Kompas.com, the case has now entered the pembuktian, or evidentiary, phase, meaning the court is scheduled to examine proof from the parties involved rather than only preliminary arguments.

The court itself has publicly raised the question of whether it holds the authority to review the validity of the education requirements met by a vice-presidential candidate, according to a post published by the Mahkamah Konstitusi.

The challenge has drawn wider attention. DetikNews reported that President Joko Widodo responded to the lawsuit by recounting his son's school history. CNN Indonesia reported that constitutional law expert Denny Indrayana has asked the court to summon Gibran to appear.

Coverage has also linked the case to broader questions about the 2024 presidential election process. SINDOnews Nasional reported that a former KPU commissioner said no party followed the stages of that election in close detail.

What to watch next: whether the court agrees to summon Gibran and how it rules on its own jurisdiction over the candidate's education qualifications.
