The Commission on Elections will not hold off on its preparations for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections while the Supreme Court weighs a petition against postponing the polls, according to The Manila Times.
The Manila Times reports that the poll body cannot wait for the High Court to rule on the matter. A petition challenging the deferment of the barangay and SK elections has been filed before the Supreme Court, Philstar.com reports, and Inquirer.net reports that the Court has asked the government to comment on that petition.
The Daily Tribune reports that the Supreme Court has yet to decide on the constitutionality of the postponement.
Against that backdrop, a local official in Legazpi has urged barangay officials to make the most of their extended time in office, according to the Philippine News Agency.
The reports leave the timing of the village and youth polls unsettled, with the Comelec proceeding on its own track and the legal challenge still unresolved.
Watch for the government's response to the petition and for any Supreme Court action that could settle whether the postponement stands.
