Chinese electric vehicle makers are increasingly looking to Japan as a sales destination, according to a report from Jiji Press. The move comes as growth in their home market cools and Western countries raise tariff barriers against Chinese-built cars.

The report, published on Monday, says Chinese automakers are seeking new opportunities in Japan to offset the challenges they face elsewhere. Domestic sales in China have weakened, while the European Union and the United States have imposed or planned higher duties on Chinese EVs, making those markets less accessible.

Jiji Press also notes that China's domestic auto market is struggling broadly. A separate Jiji report cited by the outlet says local manufacturers are facing tough conditions due to weak consumer spending and intense price competition in the EV segment. Reuters, in related coverage, reported that China's car sales in July fell 21 percent year on year, with manufacturers accelerating their shift toward exports.

Despite the tariff pressure, Chinese EVs have continued to gain ground in Europe. Citing Chinese media, d menu news reported that Chinese EV brands reached a record share of the European market even with the new duties in place. That suggests the tariffs have not fully halted their expansion abroad.

The push into Japan is part of a wider export strategy. The Nikkei reported that the global average price of an EV has now fallen below that of a hybrid vehicle, largely because Chinese cars are flowing into emerging markets at low prices. That trend poses a headwind for Japanese automakers, which have traditionally focused on hybrids and higher-priced EVs.

What to watch next: whether Chinese EV makers can gain meaningful traction in Japan's demanding market, where domestic brands and charging infrastructure remain dominant.
