China and Malaysia have agreed to a proposal to extend the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) to Rantau Panjang, a town close to Malaysia's border with southern Thailand. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the agreement, according to The Star. The Bangkok Post reports that the two countries will build tracks running to the southern Thai border.

The decision followed a meeting between Anwar and China's premier, China Daily reported. Anwar described the visit to China as opening fresh opportunities for investment and trade between the two nations, NST Online reported.

The ECRL is a China-backed railway project in Malaysia, and the agreed extension would carry it further north toward the Thai frontier. The reports did not specify a construction timeline, cost, or the exact route the new tracks would follow. It is also not yet clear how the line would connect with rail infrastructure on the Thai side of the border, or whether Bangkok has been formally consulted on the plan. The Bangkok Post's headline frames the project as a joint China-Malaysia effort to lay tracks reaching southern Thailand, while the Malaysian side has so far described it as an extension of the existing ECRL to Rantau Panjang.

Anwar's trip also produced commitments on wider trade and investment cooperation, though the details released so far remain broad. The prime minister's office has not published a full breakdown of what was signed or discussed.

What to watch next: whether Malaysia and China release a timeline, funding arrangement, and route for the extension, and whether Thai authorities respond to plans for tracks reaching their southern border.
