Health authorities have confirmed six locally acquired cases of chikungunya in a village in the Gironde department of southwestern France, according to a report from ici.fr. The cases were reported on Friday, August 14, 2026, and several mosquito control operations are scheduled in response.

The infections are described as autochthonous, meaning those affected had not traveled to regions where the virus is typically found. This indicates the virus is being transmitted locally by mosquitoes, likely the tiger mosquito species, which is known to carry chikungunya, dengue, and other arboviruses.

The report from ici.fr did not name the specific village or provide details on the condition of the six individuals. However, the planned mosquito control operations are intended to reduce the local insect population and limit further spread of the virus.

The Gironde cases are part of a broader pattern across France this summer. Santé publique France, the national public health agency, reported that arboviral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes continue to progress during the 2026 season. Similar responses have been triggered elsewhere in the country. In the Tarn department, two chikungunya cases led to mosquito control operations in Mazamet and Labastide-Rouairoux, according to ladepeche.fr. Around Toulouse, emergency mosquito treatments were launched in three cities following reports of dengue and chikungunya, as covered by Actu.fr. In Blaye, also in Gironde, a treatment against the tiger mosquito was carried out after a single arbovirus case, with Sud Ouest quoting officials saying the interventions aim to eliminate any insects carrying the virus.

With local transmission now confirmed in multiple regions, authorities are expected to continue monitoring mosquito populations and may expand control measures if further cases emerge.
