The Indian government has informed the Supreme Court that it is actively considering moving the NEET-UG medical entrance exam to a computer-based format, according to The Hindu. The statement was made during a court hearing on August 4, 2026, as part of ongoing proceedings related to the exam’s integrity.

In a separate report, Live Law noted that the Centre also sought to place on record the safeguards now in place for the question paper process. The Times of India reported that the government wants to formally submit these protective measures to the court, covering the journey of the paper from printing to the moment it reaches students.

According to Hindustan Times, the government told the court it has undertaken a comprehensive overhaul of the examination system to eliminate the possibility of paper leaks. The submissions come amid continued scrutiny of the NEET-UG process following past irregularities.

The government’s push for a computer-based test would mark a significant shift from the current pen-and-paper format. Officials appear to be framing the move as a structural fix, while also detailing the layered safeguards already introduced in the existing system.

The Supreme Court is expected to assess whether these measures are sufficient or whether a transition to digital delivery is necessary. The next hearing will likely clarify the timeline for any potential switch and whether the court will mandate changes beyond what the Centre has proposed.
