Brazil's Congress is set to revisit a controversial tax on low-cost international online purchases, a measure popularly known as the "taxa das blusinhas" (tax on little blouses). According to CNN Brasil, the proposal is returning to the legislative agenda after a period of inactivity.

The renewed debate comes as lawmakers prepare to analyze a provisional measure that would end the tax. Reports from G1 indicate that the presidential palace, the Planalto, has welcomed a move by Senate President Davi Alcolumbre to establish a commission to examine the measure. This procedural step is seen as a positive gesture by the government, which has been pushing for the tax's removal.

Folha de S.Paulo reports that the government has successfully unblocked five provisional measures, with the relevant commissions scheduled to be installed on a Wednesday. The Senate's official news service also confirmed that the provisional measure concerning the tax on international purchases will be reviewed by Congress. VEJA magazine adds that the commission tasked with analyzing the measure has now been formally installed.

The "taxa das blusinhas" has been a point of contention, affecting Brazilians who frequently buy affordable items from international e-commerce platforms. The tax was originally introduced to level the playing field for domestic retailers, who argued they were at a disadvantage compared to foreign competitors benefiting from tax exemptions on small shipments.

However, the measure has faced public criticism and political pushback, leading to the current effort to repeal it. The upcoming congressional analysis will determine the final fate of the tax, with the government signaling its support for ending the levy. The decision will be closely watched by consumers and the retail sector alike, as it will directly impact the cost of cross-border online shopping for millions of Brazilians.
