Lando Norris will start Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix from pole position, his first top grid slot since the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid in mid-September, according to Motorsport-Total.com. The São Paulo race, the 20th round of the 2026 season, begins at 18:00 CET at Interlagos. Light rain was already falling in the city ahead of the start, though the outlet reports that the precipitation is not expected to match the intensity of Saturday's downpour.

Saturday's qualifying was shaped by heavy rain, and the starting order was further reshuffled by engine-related grid penalties handed to five drivers. One of the beneficiaries is Nico Hülkenberg, who will line up fourth. Motorsport-Total.com has published the full grid with all penalties applied.

Why it matters

Mercedes can secure the constructors' championship in Brazil. Kimi Antonelli clinched the drivers' title in Mexico, and the team now needs to outscore Ferrari by just three points on Sunday to take the teams' crown. The odds appear favorable: both Ferrari drivers start outside the top ten because of grid penalties, so unless the Scuderia produces a major recovery drive, Mercedes should be able to close out the title under normal circumstances, the outlet reports.

Alpine's difficult Saturday

Alpine endured a damaging qualifying session, with both cars eliminated in Q1 and, to make matters worse, getting in each other's way. Pierre Gasly said the team could have handled the session better. He explained that he lost two tenths on the back straight and then found himself directly behind teammate Franco Colapinto. Gasly said he was confident the pair would discuss the incident and try to improve next time, calling the outcome far from ideal and suggesting a place in Q2, around 15th, had been within reach. He also conceded that, viewed more broadly, the team had been nowhere throughout the session.

Steve Nielsen echoed that assessment, saying the team has work to do to fully understand why it was among the slowest cars in the wet session.

Williams gains, Sainz frustrated

Williams had reason for encouragement, at least on one side of the garage. Alexander Albon reached Q3 for the first time since 2025. Team principal James Vowles praised him, describing the conditions as among the hardest he could remember and saying Albon delivered exactly when it counted. Albon said the session was difficult overall but that the team made the most of it, expressing satisfaction with laps in Q1 and Q2 that were right at the limit and adding that the car felt good again in Q3. He said the conditions were tough for everyone and that he genuinely enjoyed them.

Carlos Sainz was less fortunate, eliminated in Q2. He said he switched to intermediate tires one lap too late and, because of a red flag, could not set a time on that compound, which he found very frustrating. Sainz described it simply as bad luck.

Tire strategy and weather

Should the race stay dry, Pirelli expects a two-stop strategy. Dario Marrafuschi said analysis of the long runs prompted the supplier to revise the simulations carried out before the weekend. Tire wear was higher than anticipated, leading to a bigger drop-off in performance over a stint, which is why a two-stop approach is now the preferred option. Pirelli specifically suggests two stints on the soft compound and one on the medium, with the hard tire normally not a realistic choice at this circuit. Marrafuschi added that a one-stop strategy looks considerably less competitive, with the estimated race time roughly ten seconds slower than the optimal two-stop plan. Rain, of course, would overturn all of it.

The weather remains the biggest question before the start. Drizzle had returned to São Paulo, and rain is possible around the race start, but Motorsport-Total.com reports that conditions should allow the race to run, unlike Saturday.

Coverage of the race continues on the outlet's live ticker through the evening, with a live analysis planned on the Formel1.de YouTube channel from 23:30 CET.
