Lando Norris will start Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix from pole position, his first since the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid in mid-September, according to Motorsport-Total.com. The São Paulo race, the 20th round of the 2026 season, is scheduled to begin at 18:00 CET. Light rain was already falling in the city ahead of the start, though the outlet reports that conditions are not expected to be as severe as the heavy downpour that disrupted Saturday's qualifying.

Mercedes, meanwhile, can secure the constructors' championship in Brazil. Following Kimi Antonelli's drivers' title in Mexico, the team needs only to outscore Ferrari by three points. Motorsport-Total.com notes that both Ferrari cars will line up outside the top ten because of grid penalties, making a large comeback necessary if the Scuderia is to delay Mercedes' celebrations.

Why it matters

The race brings together several storylines at once: a wet-weather start, a shuffled grid and a possible title decider. Saturday's qualifying was heavily influenced by rain, and five drivers have since received engine-related penalties, further reshaping the order. One beneficiary is Nico Hülkenberg, who will move up to fourth on the grid, per Motorsport-Total.com.

Alpine's difficult Saturday

Alpine endured a poor qualifying session, with both cars eliminated in Q1 and, according to the outlet, getting in each other's way in the process. Pierre Gasly said he believed the team could have handled the session better. He explained that he lost two tenths on the back straight and then found himself directly behind teammate Franco Colapinto. Gasly added that he was confident the team would discuss the matter and improve next time, and that reaching Q2 in 15th place had been possible. He also conceded that, viewed more broadly, the team had been off the pace throughout the session.

Steve Nielsen, quoted by Motorsport-Total.com, said the team has work to do to fully understand why it was among the slowest cars in the wet session.

Williams gains, Sainz frustrated

Williams had a brighter afternoon, at least on one side of the garage. Alexander Albon reached Q3 for the first time since 2025. Team principal James Vowles praised him for delivering in some of the most difficult conditions he could recall. Albon said the session was challenging overall but that the team made the most of it, expressing satisfaction with laps in Q1 and Q2 that he described as right at the limit, and adding that the pace felt good again in Q3. He said the conditions were hard for everyone and that he had enjoyed them.

Carlos Sainz was less fortunate, exiting in Q2. He said he switched to intermediate tyres one lap too late and was then unable to set a time on them because of a red flag, which he described as very frustrating. Sainz attributed the outcome to bad luck.

Strategy and the forecast

Should the race stay dry, Pirelli expects two pit stops. Dario Marrafuschi explained that analysis of the long runs prompted the tyre supplier to revise the simulations carried out before the weekend. He said wear was higher than anticipated, leading to a greater drop in performance over a stint, which makes a two-stop strategy the preferred option. Pirelli's specific proposal is two stints on the soft compound and one on the medium, with the hard tyre normally not a realistic choice. Marrafuschi also said a one-stop approach appears clearly less competitive, with the estimated race time roughly ten seconds slower than the optimal two-stop plan. Rain, however, would overturn those calculations.

Motorsport-Total.com adds that it will continue covering the race from the paddock through the evening, and that a live analysis is planned on the Formel1.de YouTube channel from 23:30 CET.

The main question now is whether the weather holds. Watch the start at 18:00 CET to see whether Norris converts pole and whether Mercedes closes out the constructors' title.
