Brazil’s grid operator, the ONS, has activated an emergency plan to manage an excess of electricity on the national network, according to CNN Brasil. The move, reported on Sunday, marks the second time this year the operator has taken such action to curb oversupply.

The emergency measure involves cutting generation to prevent instability, as reported by Folha de S.Paulo and Jornal do Comércio. The ONS determined the reduction in output due to too much power being produced, a situation that risks overwhelming the system, according to Valor Econômico.

The surplus is largely driven by solar power, which has grown so fast that the grid can no longer absorb all of it, Brazil Journal reports. The ONS plan is designed to avoid blackouts by temporarily reducing the flow of electricity from generators, ensuring the network remains balanced.

This is the second emergency cut ordered by the ONS in 2026, following a similar action earlier in the year, according to multiple outlets. The repeated need for such measures highlights the strain that rapid renewable expansion is placing on Brazil’s transmission infrastructure.

The operator’s response focuses on managing supply in real time rather than expanding capacity, which takes years to build. The plan likely involves coordinating with large power producers to scale back output during peak generation hours, when solar panels flood the grid with more electricity than demand can absorb.

What to watch next: Whether the ONS will need to impose further cuts as solar capacity continues to grow faster than the network can be upgraded.
