Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has warned that the "countdown" for the federal government has begun, following disputed elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). His remarks came as he announced plans to hold a rally in the AJK district of Poonch ahead of the polls, according to Dawn.

Bilawal described the AJK elections as "bloody elections" and accused the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of rigging the vote, Dawn reports. He has vowed to challenge the results through legal means, signaling a prolonged political confrontation over the outcome.

The PPP leader's comments drew an immediate response from the federal government. Information Minister Atta Tarar rejected the accusations as "baseless" and urged political parties to accept the AJK election results gracefully, according to The Express Tribune. Tarar called on the PPP, which is formally an ally in the ruling coalition, to respect the democratic process.

The dispute highlights growing tensions between the PPP and PML-N, despite their partnership at the federal level. Bilawal's threat of a federal "countdown" suggests the PPP may escalate its opposition to the government beyond the AJK election issue.

Geo News reports that Bilawal issued his warning after the AJK results were announced, framing the alleged rigging as a precursor to broader political battles. The PPP chairman appears to be positioning his party as a vocal critic of the PML-N's conduct in the regional vote.

What to watch next: Whether the PPP follows through on its legal challenge and how the Poonch rally reshapes the political landscape ahead of any further electoral contests.
