Baoting County held a player selection event on the morning of October 6, according to 中国新闻网, as the county builds its squad for the second Hainan Provincial City Football League. The trials took place at a training base and drew local football enthusiasts who competed for places on the team. The league is scheduled to open on October 17.
Why it matters
The selection event is one of Baoting's main steps toward putting together a competitive side for the provincial competition, 中国新闻网 reports. It also serves as a way for the county to identify local football talent and lift the overall standard of play in the area.
According to 中国新闻网, the trials were designed to give a full picture of each candidate's physical condition. The tests included a 30-meter sprint, a 5-meter shuttle run and a 2,400-meter run, which together measured speed, agility and endurance. The aim was to screen out players in strong form and build a squad capable of representing Baoting.
Building a squad for the provincial stage
A coach involved in the process said the county had selected a mix of experienced players and newer faces, a combination intended to balance the team's competitive level, according to 中国新闻网. The coach described the trials as part of Baoting's preparations for the second edition of the provincial league.
The report did not name the coach or give further details on the selection criteria beyond the physical tests.
Once the selection is complete, the chosen players will move into a training phase. 中国新闻网 reports that the squad will go through systematic training to sharpen match fitness, refine tactics and bring players up to full readiness for the provincial competition. The county's stated goal is to field a team that shows Baoting's spirit and character on the pitch.
The second Hainan Provincial City Football League is set to begin on October 17, with the opening match to follow the completion of team preparations across the province.
What to watch: whether Baoting's mix of veteran and new players translates into results once the league kicks off on October 17.
