Azimio La Umoja, Kenya’s main opposition coalition, has added several prominent figures to its National Council in a major leadership overhaul, according to multiple Kenyan outlets. The move, reported by the-star.co.ke and Citizen Digital, brings former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former minister Peter Munya, and Kivuti into the coalition’s top decision-making body.

The reshuffle comes as former President Uhuru Kenyatta pushes for a broader “super coalition” aimed at challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 elections, the Daily Nation reports. Standardmedia.co.ke notes that the current restructuring borrows from the organizational patterns of past Kenyan political alliances, suggesting a deliberate strategy to consolidate opposition strength.

The meeting that sealed the changes also saw the return of Charity Ngilu, a veteran politician who had been absent from the political spotlight for months, according to People Daily. Her reappearance at the crucial Azimio session signals an effort to reunite veteran leaders under one banner.

The additions to the National Council expand the coalition’s leadership beyond its earlier core, potentially broadening its regional and ethnic appeal. Matiang’i, a former Interior Cabinet Secretary under Kenyatta, brings significant administrative experience, while Munya and Ngilu have long histories in Kenyan politics.

Analysts quoted in the reports suggest the coalition is learning from previous alliances that succeeded by balancing power among multiple factions. The inclusion of new leaders may also be an attempt to preempt internal disputes that have weakened past opposition blocs.

What to watch next is whether the expanded council can translate this leadership unity into a formal electoral pact ahead of the 2027 vote, and whether Ruto’s camp responds with its own coalition adjustments.
