Atletico Madrid stayed second in the Spanish La Liga table on 25 points after their match against Deportivo de A Coruña, according to the standings published by BBC on Saturday 24 October 2026. The result leaves Diego Simeone's side two points behind leaders Barcelona, who have 27 points from nine games. Deportivo sit tenth on 11 points after ten matches.

The BBC's table, last updated at 21:55 on Saturday, shows Atletico with eight wins, one draw and one loss from ten games, scoring 20 goals and conceding eight for a goal difference of 12. Deportivo have two wins, five draws and three losses, with 13 goals for and 13 against.

Why it matters

Atletico's position matters because the gap at the top of the table is narrow. Barcelona have won all nine of their league games so far, while Atletico have played one more match. Real Madrid, in third on 21 points from nine games, have lost twice and remain within reach of both sides.

The standings also show how congested the middle of the table is. Deportivo's 11 points place them tenth, but the same total is shared by several clubs around them, including Celta Vigo in ninth and Osasuna in eleventh. A single result can move a team several places.

How the match lined up

BBC listed Atletico's starting eleven with Jan Oblak in goal and captain's armband, behind a back line of Marcos Llorente, Marc Pubill, David Hancko and Alejandro Grimaldo. Pablo Barrios, Morten Hjulmand and Álex Baena started in midfield, with Ademola Lookman, Julián Álvarez and Lee Kang-In up front.

Simeone made changes at half-time, bringing on Giuliano Simeone for Barrios and Robin Le Normand for Lookman. Lee Kang-In was replaced by Alexander Sørloth on 67 minutes, and Rodrigo Mendoza came on for Hjulmand on 80 minutes. Bookings went to Pubill on 26 minutes, Baena on 86 minutes and Sørloth on 85 minutes, with Giuliano Simeone also cautioned on 87 minutes.

Deportivo, managed by Antonio Hidalgo, started Leo Román in goal. Miguel Loureiro, José Giménez and Adrià Alti formed part of the defence, with Gabriel Quagliata and David Mella as wing backs. Diego Villares captained the side in midfield alongside Lorenzo Amatucci and Soriano, with Nsongo and Hernández leading the attack.

Hidalgo used his bench early, sending on Adama Traoré and Luismi Cruz for Mella and Villares on 58 minutes. Quagliata was booked on 79 minutes before being replaced by Jensen on 80, and Riki Rodríguez came on for Amatucci on 84 minutes.

What the table shows

Barcelona's perfect record of nine wins from nine games has produced 39 goals scored and nine conceded, the strongest attack and defence in the division on the published figures. Atletico's 20 goals are the third-highest in the table, behind Barcelona and Real Madrid's 23.

Below the top three, Real Betis are fourth on 19 points and Real Sociedad fifth on 16. Sevilla sit sixth on 14, followed by Alavés and Villarreal on 12 each. At the bottom, Valencia are 19th on six points and Málaga are 20th on five, still without a win after ten matches.

The BBC notes that first to fourth place brings UEFA Champions League football, fifth brings a Europa League spot and sixth a Conference League qualifying place, while the bottom three positions mean relegation.

Coverage of the fixture was carried across several outlets, with BBC publishing the pre-match statistics and head-to-head record, Sports Mole issuing a preview with team news and predictions, and MARCA running live updates. Goal.com and 101 Great Goals framed the wider weekend around Álvarez's impact and the pressure building on the teams around Atletico at the top.

Next up, attention turns to whether Atletico can close the gap on Barcelona, who have a game in hand, and whether Deportivo can convert their run of draws into wins as the middle of the table tightens.
