Atlético Madrid led Barcelona 1-0 after 40 minutes of their Spanish La Liga meeting at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday, 8 November, according to BBC Sport. The match pits the league's top two sides against each other, with Atlético sitting first on 31 points and Barcelona second on 30 after 12 games apiece.

BBC Sport's Spanish football reporter Elizabeth Conway, covering the game from the stadium, described Atlético as the stronger team for much of the first half. She also noted that the hosts looked a completely different side from the one that lost 2-0 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Why it matters

The fixture carries weight beyond the scoreline. Only one point separates the two clubs at the top of the table, and both have won ten of their 12 league matches. Atlético's record shows one draw and one defeat, while Barcelona's two losses leave them chasing. Real Madrid, also on 30 points, sit third.

A result either way would shift the balance at the summit. For Barcelona, the match is also a test of how they cope with sustained pressure, something BBC's reporter flagged as a problem area during the first half.

Atlético's press and Barcelona's struggles

According to BBC's coverage, Atlético controlled possession and pressed Barcelona relentlessly, closing down the visitors within seconds of them winning the ball. Conway described the pressing as top class and said Barcelona were finding it hard to string passes together.

Julian Alvarez drew particular praise. BBC reported that he is having a fantastic game and noted he nearly joined Barcelona in the summer. On one break, he carried the ball into the box, skipped past a defender and forced goalkeeper Joan García into a save that almost saw the ball creep over the line. Earlier, Alvarez managed a shot while surrounded by four Barcelona defenders, and García fumbled the ball on his own line before recovering it. Conway said Barcelona's defending was not strong enough at that stage, with Atlético finding and exploiting gaps.

Atlético's set pieces also caused trouble. A short corner ended with Alvarez delivering a cross toward the back post that Alejandro Grimaldo could only stretch for, the ball bouncing wide. Conway said Atlético looked threatening from that set piece and that Barcelona would not want to concede many more in similar positions.

Giuliano Simeone produced a moment of skill in the box that drew a strong reaction from the home crowd, with Conway noting his father, Diego Simeone, was watching from the touchline. Lee Kang-In also tested Barcelona, firing a shot from distance straight at García, and was later booked for a late challenge on João Cancelo at the halfway line. Barcelona players wanted a card for that foul; the referee declined.

Barcelona's brightest moments

Barcelona's best openings came through Lamine Yamal. Early on, he tracked back to help Cancelo in defense. Later, after Atlético's Pablo Barrios lost the ball in his own box, Yamal struck immediately from a tight angle but hit the side-netting. Conway noted it was the first time Yamal's left-foot trickery had appeared in the match when he danced around several defenders and played the ball into the box for Fermin Lopez, whose shot was deflected away. A similar move saw Yamal pull the ball back for Lopez, whose first-time effort was blocked.

Anthony Gordon also came close for Barcelona when a diagonal ball into the box was headed down to him, but his first-time strike hit a defender's heel. Raphinha had two set-piece chances: a free-kick in a promising position that he chipped straight into the Atlético wall, and a low corner that was cleared without difficulty.

At one stage Barcelona deliberately slowed the game with a spell of possession, which BBC's reporter described as understandable given the pressure they were under.

Elsewhere in La Liga

Sunday's other fixtures were completed. Real Betis won 2-0 away at Elche, Real Sociedad beat Rayo Vallecano 1-0, Celta Vigo and Levante drew 0-0, and Villarreal defeated Getafe 2-0.

The Atlético-Barcelona match was still in progress at the time of BBC's reporting, with the score at 1-0 after 40 minutes.

What to watch next: whether Barcelona can turn their possession spells into chances in the second half, and whether Atlético's pressing holds up as the game wears on.
