The S&P/ASX 200 index fell sharply on Friday, 14 August, dragged down by heavy losses in mining and gold sectors, according to Market Index. The decline marked a weak end to what reports describe as the market's worst week since April.

Investors rotated out of resources and into technology stocks, with WiseTech Global (WTC) and Xero (XRO) among the notable gainers. Market Index reported that the session saw a clear switch toward tech names as commodity-linked shares sold off.

The rout was led by Australia's largest company, which reportedly lost nearly $10 billion in market value, according to news24.com.au. That single decline was a major factor in pulling the broader index lower. Commonwealth Bank of Australia also suffered its worst day in three months, as noted by The Australian, while Cleanaway and ASX Ltd were among the top gainers.

Financial stocks also dipped during the session, adding to the pressure on the index, per reporting from the Sydney Morning Herald. The combination of weak miners, falling gold prices, and softer financials outweighed support from the tech sector.

The shift suggests investors are favoring growth-oriented companies over cyclical resource plays in the current environment. With the ASX 200 closing out its worst week since April, market participants will be watching whether the rotation into tech continues or if resource stocks stabilize in the coming sessions.
