Asian markets closed mixed on Friday, August 14, 2026, with Seoul leading the region's gainers, according to financial news outlet 金融界.
South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index rose 2.42%, while Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index gained 1.59%. On mainland China, the ChiNext board, which tracks growth-oriented stocks in Shenzhen, advanced 1.12%. Other regional markets finished the session lower, though 金融界 did not specify which ones declined.
The strong showing in Seoul pushed the Korean stock market's total capitalization back above the 6,000 trillion won threshold, as reported by 新浪财经. That milestone comes after a volatile stretch for Korean equities.
According to 华尔街见闻, the KOSPI posted a weekly gain of 11%, snapping a seven-week losing streak. The same report noted that institutional investors have yet to build significant positions, raising the possibility of a short squeeze in the near term.

However, the rally has not been smooth for all participants. 金融界 separately reported that the market's return to a technical bull market has left some retail investors behind. Individual traders who sold at the lowest point or suffered losses in retirement accounts have been described as "cooling off" their activity, even as the index climbs.
The divergent outcomes highlight a market where index gains and investor experience are not always aligned. With the KOSPI back in bull-market territory and institutional positioning still light, the next sessions will show whether momentum can hold or if the squeeze runs out of steam.
