Asante Otchere has said John Boadu does not compare to Asiedu Nketiah of the National Democratic Congress in terms of pedigree, gravitas, or value to his party, according to Modern Ghana. Otchere also described the decision to elect John Boadu as chairman of the New Patriotic Party as a wrong one, CitiNewsroom.com reports.
The criticism came as other figures offered a different view of Boadu's election. Professor Mike Oquaye called him an exceptionally gifted political figure, according to Adomonline.com. Paul Yandoh described him as a human-centred and mature politician who can deliver victory in 2028, Modern Ghana reports.
GhanaWeb reported that a lecturer said Boakye Agyarko was seen as anti-Bawumia, in comments on the outcome of the contest Boadu won. The reports do not give the date of the election or the margin of Boadu's victory.
The contrasting reactions point to a debate inside and around the NPP over the leadership chosen after the contest. Otchere's comparison sets Boadu against Asiedu Nketiah, a long-serving figure in the rival NDC, and questions the value he brings to the NPP in that light. Supporters quoted in the same coverage instead stress Boadu's political skill and appeal ahead of the next general election.
What to watch next is whether the NPP's new leadership settles internal disagreements and how Boadu's tenure is judged as the 2028 election approaches.
