An Argentine man living in Spain is among those unaccounted for after the train collision near Toledo, according to Infobae. Agustín Randazzo, 51, was travelling in car 8 of the AVE convoy involved in the crash, and his relatives say they have had no word of him since the collision. The accident occurred at around 8:53 a.m. between Urda and Los Yébenes in the province of Toledo, and the provisional toll stands at at least 68 dead with dozens injured.
Why it matters
Randazzo's case is one of many. As hours pass without confirmed information, families of passengers are turning to social media and to each other to locate people who have not been in contact since the crash. Some users have even set up independent websites to pool information on travellers who remain unaccounted for, Infobae reports. The scale of the emergency — with many injured people arriving at hospitals without identification — has left relatives waiting on official data while trying to trace their own.
A routine work trip that ended in uncertainty
Randazzo is Argentine by nationality and has lived in Spain since 2002. According to Infobae, he was making the trip from Madrid that he regularly takes for work when the collision happened. His cousin, Rafael García Junicol, told Infobae that he learned Randazzo had been on the train from Randazzo's brother. García Junicol has appealed publicly for help in finding him.
Randazzo's brother, Jorge, has filed a formal report with police in Madrid and has provided DNA samples, Infobae reports. He was travelling on to Toledo to visit hospitals in the area and check whether his brother is among the patients admitted there. The family says authorities have told them to wait while data is gathered, noting that many of the injured have not yet been identified. García Junicol shared a phone number, +54 9 11 4192-7700, for anyone with information — whether Randazzo is in a hospital without identification or was seen after the accident.
To assist the search, the family has circulated a recent photograph and described his appearance. They say he has a partly grey beard and several visible tattoos, and that he often wears a black cap and dark sunglasses.
Randazzo's partner, Sergi, has also joined the effort online, writing that he had gone several hours without news of his partner, who he said was travelling from Madrid to Seville in car 8. Sergi said neither family nor friends knew anything about his condition and asked for help. He was not travelling to Toledo immediately, waiting instead for official information, according to Infobae.
Families wait as hospitals and authorities collect data
The uncertainty described by Randazzo's relatives echoes accounts from other families. Infobae's reporting cites the cases of David Reina, a young man from Málaga who was on the crashed AVE and whose whereabouts are unknown, and of David Benítez, from Seville, whose family has asked for help locating him after the accident. A relative of another missing passenger told Telecinco, as cited in the coverage, that the family had undergone a DNA test and that the missing man would have made contact if he were able.
Emergency crews are continuing to work at the site while investigators examine the causes of the collision between the AVE and an Iryo train. Health authorities in Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha have issued an urgent call for blood donations.
For now, Randazzo's family is left with the same instruction they say they have been given: wait, and keep checking. Anyone with information about his whereabouts can reach the family at the number they have made public.
What to watch: official updates from Spanish authorities on identified victims and the injured, and any confirmation from the family about Randazzo's status.
