Argentina's government has exchanged 75% of a dollar-linked bond that was due at the end of September, according to Infobae. The operation pushed back maturities worth about 5 trillion pesos, the outlet reported.

Infobae described the move as reducing a source of tension in the foreign exchange market. Several Argentine outlets, including La Nación, Ámbito and iProfesional, carried similar accounts of the swap, with iProfesional attributing the operation to Economy Minister Luis Caputo. The reports said the exchange covered a letra, or short-term note, tied to the dollar's value.

The peso-denominated figure of 5 trillion reflects the local currency value of the deferred obligations. The reports did not specify the new maturity dates in the material available, though one outlet, diarioelnorte.com.ar, framed its coverage around the cost of postponing the debt until 2028.

Dollar-linked instruments pay holders based on the exchange rate, so a large maturity can add pressure on the currency market when it comes due. By rolling a majority of the note into later dates, the government lowers the volume of obligations it must meet in the near term.

The reports did not detail the terms offered to holders or the interest cost of the exchange. The remaining 25% of the bond was not swapped, according to the coverage.

What to watch next: whether the government completes a similar operation for the rest of the note and how the deferred maturities are handled in 2028.
