Argentina's government has turned down a British request to stop international arbitration proceedings tied to oil exploration around the Falkland Islands, according to La Nación. Buenos Aires defended its decision to take the dispute to arbitration and dismissed British criticism of that move, Filo News reported. The disagreement marks a further strain in relations between the two countries.

The United States has weighed in, calling on both sides to lower the temperature. According to Infobae, Washington asked Argentina and the United Kingdom to "de-escalate" tensions over the islands, which Argentina calls Malvinas. The UK also summoned Argentina's ambassador in London over the dispute, iProfesional reported.

The episode comes amid a broader shift in the UK's posture toward President Javier Milei's government. La Nación reported that London has moved from considering a free trade agreement with Argentina to viewing the country as an "unreliable partner."

The competing claims over the Falklands/Malvinas date back decades, and oil exploration in waters near the islands has repeatedly renewed friction. The latest round centers on Argentina's effort to bring the matter before an international arbitration body, a step Britain opposes.

What to watch next: whether the arbitration proceeds and whether the US call for de-escalation produces any change in the UK's position.
