Argentina is preparing for the strongest phase of the Súper Niño weather pattern, with forecasts pointing to December as the peak of the rains and a wide band of the country already under storm warnings. According to Clarin.com, the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) issued orange and yellow alerts across more than ten provinces on Thursday, 22 October 2026, describing the day as the most severe point of the current storm front. The same outlet reports that environmental sciences specialist Inti Bonomo expects the phenomenon to keep intensifying, telling La Nación that "it is going to keep growing and the peak is going to be in December."

Why it matters

The warnings matter because they cover both the farming heartland and heavily populated areas. Clarin.com lists orange alerts — its second-highest level — for parts of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Chaco, San Luis, La Pampa, Río Negro and Neuquén. A yellow alert for storms runs in parallel for the City of Buenos Aires, the province of Buenos Aires, Misiones, Formosa, Corrientes, Chaco, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, Córdoba, La Pampa, San Luis, La Rioja, San Juan, Mendoza, Río Negro and Neuquén. In the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, Clarin.com reports, the morning should stay overcast with little chance of rain, but isolated storms are expected from the afternoon, with a 40% to 70% chance of rainfall by night.

Road crews move ahead of the water

State roads agency Vialidad Nacional has begun preventive maintenance on national routes in Corrientes, according to Clarin.com. The aim, the agency said, is to improve water runoff and cut the risk of flooding, erosion and damage to infrastructure given the El Niño forecasts. Work is currently focused on clearing and conditioning culverts along Ruta Nacional 118 between kilometres 160 and 190, and along Ruta Nacional 14 between kilometres 730 and 740. The clearing removes sediment and vegetation, restoring drainage capacity so water can pass during heavy rainfall.

A global pattern with local costs

Clarin.com's coverage places the Argentine warnings inside a much wider picture. In Southeast Asia, the outlet reports, the phenomenon is worsening forest fires in Indonesia, with Borneo among the hardest-hit areas and critically endangered orangutans losing more than half their habitat across the archipelago. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added an assessment to its Red List of Ecosystems on Thursday finding that 96% of the world's assessed warm, shallow-water coral reef ecosystems face an extremely high risk of collapse by 2075, driven mainly by ocean warming. The IUCN named Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Coral Triangle, the Mesoamerican Reef System and Red Sea reefs among those classified as critically endangered, and noted that western Galápagos reefs have been listed as collapsed since the 1982–1983 El Niño. In southern Africa, Clarin.com reports, heads of state of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) called for stronger regional preparation and coordination, with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa warning that developing El Niño conditions threaten food security, water supply and economic activity, and recalling the severe drought of 2023 and 2024.

Mixed signals for farmers

For Argentina's agricultural sector, the picture is not one-sided. Meteored Argentina reported, as cited by Clarin.com, that El Niño brings neither pure benefit nor pure disaster for the country's livestock and farming. Diario Norte, meanwhile, reported intense rains and rising rivers for the final quarter of the year, and La Gaceta reported that El Niño could reshape the summer of 2027, including what is expected along the Atlantic coast.

What happens next will depend on how the storm front moves through the weekend and whether the December peak arrives as forecast. Watch the SMN's alert updates and the condition of drainage infrastructure on the routes now being cleared.
