Apple has been testing a dedicated Apple Pencil for its upcoming foldable iPhone, but the company may decide against unveiling the accessory alongside the device, according to Forbes JAPAN.
The report, published Monday, suggests that while development of the stylus is underway, Apple could hold off on announcing it. No specific reason for the potential delay was provided in the coverage.
The news comes as Apple prepares for a special event scheduled for September 10 at 2 a.m. Japan time, where new iPhone models are expected to be unveiled, as reported by ITmedia. The foldable iPhone has been a subject of speculation for years, and the possibility of a dedicated stylus adds a new layer to those expectations.
Forbes JAPAN’s report aligns with earlier coverage from au Web Portal, which also noted that Apple is testing an Apple Pencil designed for the foldable iPhone. The accessory would mark a departure from the standard iPhone experience, which has never supported the Apple Pencil line.
The timing of the report is notable given broader questions about Apple’s iPhone lineup. Yahoo! News has separately reported that the struggling iPhone Air, despite weak sales, is actually a strategically important product for Apple. That context suggests the company is making deliberate choices about which features and devices to prioritize.
For now, the key question is whether Apple will introduce the foldable iPhone with or without its companion stylus. The September event could provide an answer, though Forbes JAPAN’s reporting indicates that the Pencil may not appear even if the foldable phone does.
