Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday, a result that leaves him on the verge of his first Formula 1 world title, according to ESPN. The Italian had already taken pole position for the race, Formula 1 reported. Despite the win, ESPN says he was made to wait before the championship could be confirmed.
Coverage of the race was carried live by several outlets, with ESPN and The Athletic both running updates from Austin as Antonelli led the event. NBC News reported that the victory in Texas put him on the brink of the F1 championship.
The result follows Antonelli's pole-winning performance in qualifying, which Formula 1 reported ahead of Sunday's race. ESPN's headline account of the win noted that the title was not yet settled, meaning the decisive moment will come at a later round.
The next question is when Antonelli can formally seal the championship. With the title still unconfirmed after Austin, attention turns to the following race weekend, where another strong result could complete the job.
