New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has called for patience as he begins his tenure at Stamford Bridge, according to ESPN. The Spanish coach took charge of the club this summer and is in the early stages of reshaping the squad.

Alonso stated that the team is in a building phase, ESPN reports. He emphasised that constructing a competitive side will take time and that supporters should not expect instant results. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder replaced the previous manager after Chelsea finished mid-table last season.

The 43-year-old has already overseen pre-season friendlies in Australia, where the squad showed signs of adaptation to his methods, according to BBC. Alonso has also noted significant changes in the Premier League since he left Liverpool as a player 17 years ago, Football London reports. He has pointed to five key differences, including the increased pace of the game and the financial power of top clubs.

Chelsea have been active in the transfer market, with Alonso working alongside the club’s recruitment team to bring in new talent. The Times has suggested that Alonso’s Spanish background could help him implement a possession-based style similar to that of his former mentor Pep Guardiola.

Alonso’s first competitive match in charge will be against Manchester City on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The result will offer an early indication of how quickly his project is progressing.
