An official in Akita Prefecture has been suspended for six months after appearing in a bathrobe and smoking during an online news conference, according to news.yahoo.co.jp. The disciplinary action was handed down on Friday, August 14, 2026.

The official, identified as a promotion supervisor (推進監), was also found to have been at a love hotel with a woman who was not his wife at the time of the remote briefing, the report said. He had initially claimed the woman was his spouse, but later admitted this was untrue during an internal investigation.

The incident occurred when the official joined the online press conference from the hotel room. News.yahoo.co.jp reports that he appeared on camera in a bathrobe while smoking a cigarette, and also asked whether the camera was necessary. The behavior was deemed inappropriate for a prefectural employee.

According to NHK News, the prefecture treated the matter as a case of improper conduct during an official media briefing. The official was also accused of making false statements during the prefecture’s inquiry into the incident, as reported by Kahoku Shimpo Online.

A department head quoted by fnn.jp said the conduct was "something that should never happen as a prefectural employee." The prefecture’s decision to impose a six-month suspension reflects the seriousness of the breach, which involved both the location and the manner of the official’s participation in the briefing.

The case highlights the risks of remote work arrangements for public officials, particularly when personal and professional boundaries blur. It remains to be seen whether the prefecture will introduce stricter guidelines for online participation in official duties.
