The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has finalized a $190 million financing package for Zimbabwe's CBZ Bank, according to FSX Business. The funds are earmarked to support trade and energy initiatives in the country.

The deal was reported by multiple outlets, including the Herald and NewsDay Zimbabwe, which confirmed the agreement's value and focus areas. Afreximbank's own announcement described the package as a series of loans concluded for CBZ Bank, with the goal of boosting economic activity in the region.

Beyond the direct lending, Afreximbank's subsidiary, the Africa Trade and Distribution Company Limited, has launched national trade and distribution platforms in both Zimbabwe and Malawi, as reported by Zawya. These platforms are designed to streamline trade flows and distribution networks across the two southern African nations.

The $190 million commitment signals a continued push by Afreximbank to deepen its footprint in Zimbabwe's banking sector, particularly at a time when the country is seeking to expand its energy capacity and trade volumes. CBZ Bank, one of Zimbabwe's largest lenders, will likely deploy the funds to support local businesses involved in import-export activities and energy infrastructure projects.

The financing comes as part of a broader effort by Afreximbank to address trade financing gaps across the continent. The launch of the trade and distribution platforms in Zimbabwe and Malawi aligns with this strategy, aiming to improve supply chain efficiency and market access for regional traders.

Observers will be watching to see how quickly CBZ Bank disburses the funds and whether the new platforms translate into measurable gains in cross-border trade for Zimbabwe and Malawi in the coming months.
