The African Development Bank and Nigeria are pushing African countries to take greater control of their mineral resources by processing them locally, according to The Guardian Nigeria News.
The initiative aims to shift the continent away from exporting raw materials and toward domestic industrialisation. Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, a figure involved in the push, is working to turn critical minerals into a lever for African industrialisation, as reported by Capmad.
The Guardian Nigeria News reports that Nigeria and the AfDB are urging African nations to process minerals locally for economic growth. This call comes as multiple outlets highlight the potential for Africa to move from extraction to transformation of its critical minerals.
The push focuses on the continent’s vast reserves of minerals essential for clean energy technologies, electronics, and defence. Currently, most African countries export these raw materials and then import finished products at higher prices.

Business News Nigeria notes that Africa’s critical minerals moment has arrived, with the opportunity to build value chains on the continent rather than simply shipping ore overseas.
The next step will be whether individual African governments adopt policies that mandate or incentivise local processing, and whether international investors support the necessary infrastructure.
