The Asian Football Confederation announced on Tuesday, November 3, that the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia has been pushed back to December 2027, according to 每日经济新闻. The confederation cited the security situation as the reason for the change.

The tournament had been scheduled to run from January 7 to February 5, 2027, in Saudi Arabia. Under the revised plan, it will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, 每日经济新闻 reports.

The decision moves one of Asia's biggest football events by roughly eleven months. The original dates would have placed the competition in the middle of the European club season; the new window overlaps the year-end period instead.

Coverage of the announcement also touched on Japan. According to 虎扑体育网, Japanese outlet Sports Nippon reported that national team manager Hajime Moriyasu will still step down in February next year even with the tournament delayed.

The postponement follows a period in which the AFC had been weighing its options. view.inews.qq.com noted ahead of the announcement that a December 2027 slot was under consideration and that the confederation was due to meet on November 18 to decide. The November 3 announcement settled the question earlier than that meeting.

What to watch next: whether the AFC or Saudi organizers issue further details on venues, ticketing and the qualifying calendar now that the tournament window has shifted.
