The Accord Party has said Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress should anticipate an electoral outcome in 2027 comparable to the result of the recent United States midterm elections, Peoples Gazette Nigeria reports. Dele Oladeji, who chairs the party's Lagos State chapter, made the prediction in an interview in Lagos on Thursday.

According to Peoples Gazette Nigeria, Mr Oladeji argued that the U.S. vote, in which the Democratic Party took control of Congress back from the governing Republican Party, showed voters turning against a ruling party they had grown tired of. He said the same mood is building in Nigeria.

Why it matters

The comments place the 2027 general election firmly in the frame of opposition messaging, with parties already treating the American result as a template for their campaigns. If Mr Oladeji's reading is right, the APC could face losses in legislative races rather than a simple repeat of its previous victories.

His remarks also signal how Nigerian opposition parties intend to frame the next election cycle: as a referendum on the cost of living and government policy rather than a contest of personalities.

What the Accord Party chairman said

Mr Oladeji described the Democratic Party's win as evidence that American voters had turned their backs on the administration of Donald Trump. He said the result pointed to a public leaning toward change, and that he expects the same dynamic to play out in Nigeria's next general election.

He predicted substantial movement in the country's political landscape, with opposition parties picking up a large number of legislative seats. In his view, voters are becoming more deliberate about how they cast ballots, and he described that trend as global rather than uniquely American.

Mr Oladeji pointed to the Anambra governorship election held on 15 August 2026 as an example of the same voter behaviour at home, and said it would be repeated across the country in 2027.

Peoples Gazette Nigeria reports that he said Nigerians are growing increasingly unhappy with government policies he characterised as unpopular, and with the economic hardship many are experiencing.

Party positioning and the road to 2027

The Accord Party, according to its Lagos chairman, is organising itself to gain from the realignment he expects, targeting seats in both federal and state legislatures. He described the U.S. result as a favourable signal pointing to political change ahead in Nigeria.

He also expressed confidence that dissatisfaction with the APC-led administration would push more voters toward opposition parties when the country goes to the polls.

The interview was reported alongside separate coverage of the U.S. midterms by other Nigerian outlets, including Premium Times Nigeria's account of 14 Nigerian-Americans winning races, and commentary from TheCable, Vanguard and Punch on what the American result might mean for Nigerian politics.

What to watch: whether other opposition parties adopt the same argument, and whether the APC responds to the comparison as campaigning for 2027 gathers pace.
