Seventeen remand prisoners escaped from the Thekkampatti sub-jail near Andipatti in Theni district late on Monday night, October 26, 2026, after assaulting the warders on duty, according to The Hindu. The breakout occurred at roughly 11 p.m., and district police have since thrown up check-posts and deployed a large number of personnel in response.

Four people have been taken into custody so far. Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Vijayendra Bidari, who travelled to the jail and reviewed the situation with Theni Superintendent of Police Praveen Gowtham and other officers, told The Hindu that one escapee, identified as Praveen Kumar, was caught within hours, and that three others were also picked up by police teams.

Why it matters

The escape raises immediate questions about security at a sub-jail holding remand prisoners, and it has pulled resources into a multi-front manhunt. According to The Hindu, 17 special teams have been constituted, and search operations are under way not only in populated areas but also in forested stretches nearby. Kerala police have been alerted as well, The Hindu reports, a sign that investigators are treating the possibility of the fugitives crossing the state border seriously.

Most of the escaped prisoners hail from Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Salem and Villupuram districts, a member of the special team told The Hindu on Tuesday. They had been lodged in the facility while serving terms in various criminal cases.

How the escape unfolded, per preliminary inquiries

Preliminary findings described by The Hindu indicate the breakout was planned. All 17 inmates were inside a single locked cell. At about 10.30 p.m., some of them summoned the warder on duty, saying one of the prisoners was having seizures and needed help. When the staff member unlocked the cell and stepped inside, the other inmates set upon him and fled.

The Times of India, in its own account, described the sequence as a fake medical emergency used to get the cell opened, followed by a sudden assault on the guards and a midnight escape. India Today and Deccan Herald both reported the breakout as a coordinated move by the inmates against the jail staff.

The Hindu reported that the names of the escaped prisoners are Lingam, Raja Sinkanthar, Karuppasamy, Silambarasan, Thirupathi, Maenchi Sundram, Sabari, Pon Muthu, Nijanth, Karthik Raja, Mugilan, Selva, Tharun, Rajkumar, Praveen, Muthu Ilango and Rajuveen.

Public asked to share information

Authorities have released two phone numbers for members of the public who may have information on the whereabouts of the prisoners still at large: 9498101570 and 9176104100, according to The Hindu.

The IGP said combing operations would continue until all the remaining accused were secured. Security has been stepped up at check-posts across the district, and personnel have been spread around the sub-jail and adjoining areas.

What to watch next: whether the remaining 13 escapees are traced in the coming days, and whether the inquiry ordered at the district level leads to any findings about staffing or procedure at the Thekkampatti facility.
